Every Moments gift carries a set of coordinates, the latitude and longitude of one exact spot on Earth. Here is how to find the coordinates of any place in under a minute, and how to read the numbers once you have them.
The quickest way: pick it on our map
On every Moments product page there is a map. Type a suburb, address or landmark into the search box, or drag the map and drop a pin on the exact spot. The coordinates that will appear on your gift are shown on the page straight away, so you can check them before you add anything to your cart.
Using Google Maps
- On a computer: open Google Maps, right-click the exact spot and the coordinates appear at the top of the menu. Click them to copy.
- On a phone: press and hold on the spot until a red pin drops. The coordinates appear in the search bar at the top.
Google shows them as two decimal numbers, for example -33.8568, 151.2153. That is the Sydney Opera House.
Using Apple Maps
Press and hold to drop a pin, then swipe up on the pin's card. The latitude and longitude are listed near the bottom.
What the numbers mean
Latitude is how far north or south of the equator a place is, from 0° to 90°. Everywhere in Australia is south of the equator, which is why Australian coordinates end in S (or start with a minus sign in Google Maps).
Longitude is how far east or west of Greenwich in London a place is, from 0° to 180°. Australia is east, so the second number ends in E.
On a Moments gift, the Opera House example becomes 33.8568° S, 151.2153° E. Same place, written the way it reads best on jewellery and keepsakes.
How accurate are four decimal places?
Four decimal places pin a spot to roughly 11 metres. That is enough to tell one end of a beach from the other, one house from the next, or which side of the church you said your vows on. More decimals would not mean anything to the eye, and fewer would blur the spot across a whole street.
A few Australian coordinates to try
- Sydney Opera House: 33.8568° S, 151.2153° E
- Melbourne Cricket Ground: 37.8200° S, 144.9834° E
- Uluru: 25.3444° S, 131.0369° E
- Story Bridge, Brisbane: 27.4639° S, 153.0357° E
Choosing the right spot
The best coordinates are the ones only you two would recognise: the café where you had your first date, the street of your first flat, the lookout where the question was asked. If you are stuck, our list of 12 meaningful places to put on a coordinates gift is a good place to start.
